Suite of Capabilities

Our world-class facility provides a broad set of instrumentation for your research.

The Age of Discovery is Now.

The Materials Research Lab (MRL) fosters interdisciplinary research at the forefront of materials science by bringing together world-class faculty, staff, postdocs, students, and industry in materials science, condensed matter physics, and materials chemistry in a highly-collaborative, progressive research environment.

MRL is the largest supplier of scientists and engineers educated in the use of advanced instruments for materials science in the nation, with over 100 instruments valued at over $40M.

MRL facilities are open for self-use after completing required training. In certain cases when advanced characterization is required or if the project is short-term, facility staff may perform the analysis/processing of samples for users. All users are required to submit a proposal.

Professional Support
For Your Research

MRL facilities are staffed by full-time professional research scientists and support personnel who share your passion for discovery. People like Senior Research Scientist Tim Spila, who operates MRL’s 3SDH NEC Pelletron - used to determine composition of thin films with sample sizes between two and 25 millimeters.
